    A New Day in DG...

    By Sarah Flowers (Fall '08)

For the last year, I have immensely enjoyed writing and updating this blog.  Therefore it is both with sadness and excitement that I am moving A Day in DG over to a bigger and better blogging site.  Collegians, alumnae, members of the campus community, and other guests can keep updated on Beta Beta by now going to http://uofadg.blogspot.com/.  Thank you to everyone who has read and supported this blog during the past year.  I hope that you will continue to make "A Day in DG" a part of your day!

    School's Out for the Summer!

    Lilly

    By Sarah Flowers (Fall '08)

As classes come to an end, the ladies of Delta G are looking forward to the summer break.  Sisters of Beta Beta have busy summers ahead - working, attending spring or summer classes, travelling, and (of course) spending time with our sisters. We are all so excited to have completed another successful semester at the University of Alberta and now look forward to having a well-deserved break from the business of student life.  We wish everyone a wonderful summer and hope to see you during recruitment in September!

    Delta Gamma Doing Good:

    Jenna Lee (Fall '09)

Jenna Lee (Fall ’09) is a constant source of inspiration to her sisters as she is always striving to “do good” and make the world a better place.  Read on to find out more about this amazing DG's latest efforts!

    In Her Own Words:

JennaIn September 2011, I will be cutting 12+ inches of my hair to donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.  Until then, I will be raising money to donate to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, which is “...a movement for cancer-free lives today, tomorrow and forever”.  Every dollar donated to the Alberta Cancer Foundation supports cancer research, prevention, screening, and education, as well as the treatment and care of cancer patients in Alberta. Pantene Beautiful Lengths helps the ACF by creating wigs (made from donated hair) to give to cancer patients across North America. I chose to get involved because my family has been affected by cancer a number of times, and as a result, I am a high-risk candidate for breast cancer. I would like to diminish the chances of not only myself dying of cancer, but others as well. Furthermore, my grandpa is currently suffering from lung cancer, so this particular campaign is extremely important to me. The most important thing I have learned throughout this process is that awareness is the first step to change. If the public is not aware of what my cause is about or why I am supporting that cause, it is less likely that they will support me.  Learn more about my causes by checking out:

Saying goodbye to our seniors is always bittersweet.  While we are excited for them to begin a new chapter in their lives as alumnae and members of the 'real world' beyond university, everyone is saddened by the void within chapter that their departure creates.  Everyone is so proud of our senior members and their numerous achievements, as well as excited to see what they will accomplish in the future.  We know that every one of you wonderful ladies will go on to do great things and we can't wait to read all about them in the alumnae Anchor Clanker!  Best of luck and come visit us often!

Held on the last day of classes, Senior Toast is also a great way for the rest of chapter to spend time together before exams commence and everyone moves into the library of her choice.  Best of luck to everyone on their final exams - we know everyone will "do good"!

    Delta Gamma ♥ Lilly Pulitzer!

    By Sarah Flowers (Fall '08)

As the snow finally begins to melt, there's only one thing on a DG's mind (other than exams, of course) - spring!  Of course, nothing says "spring" better than a bright and cheery Lilly Pulitzer print.  Lilly is currently holding a contest to determine which sororities will get their own customized Lilly print and we're all crossing our fingers that DG will be next!  What could be better than a bronze, pink, and blue anchor pattern?  To support DG (or the National Panhellenic Conference sorority of your choice), "like" the Lilly Pulitzer page on Facebook, click on "Greek Chic", and place your vote!  Can't wait to see which sororities are the lucky recipients of a Lilly print!

Delta Gamma placed in the top nine during the first round of voting!  We are now all hoping to make through the second round, which would put us one step closer to getting our very own Lilly Pulitzer print!  To vote, "like" the Lilly Pulitzer page on Facebook and click on "Greek Chic: Round 2".  Congratulations and best of luck to all sororities during this round of voting!

On April 2, 2011, Delta Gamma hosted its first ever Anchor Dodge - a campus-wide dodgeball tournament in support of the Delta Gamma Foundation and the CNIB.  Teams from around campus donned their best group costumes - ranging from Tight "n" Bright to Damsels in Distress - and played some serious dodgeball in the Education Gym!  Thank you to all of the teams who participated and a special congratulations to Delta Upsilon, whose team was the overall winner of Anchor Dodge!

    QUICK QUESTIONS

    1) Imagine you didn't have DG in your life. Describe your personality/life.

If I didn't have DG in my life, I would have not met some of the most wonderful ladies. It is so nice to be able to have so much in common with ladies from the moment I met them! Some of my best friends that I now have are women I met in DG and I wouldn't be the same person if I didn't have them in my life.

    2) What about DG will you miss the most?

I will miss Monday night meetings and being able to see all the inspiring young women every week and catching up with them.

    3) Leave a message for chapter – what are your hopes for DG?

I hope that the women of Beta Beta will continue to be a diverse group and will always be proud to call themselves Delta Gammas. I hope there is always continuous support and love for each other during and after university.

    FAST FAVORITES
Class/Teacher: Marketing 468 - Retailing and Channel Management and HECOL 268 - Survey of Historic Dress were two of my favourite classes that I took over the course of my degree.

Experience Outside of DG: My favourite school experience outside of Delta Gamma was going to New York for my Practicum in February 2011.

DG Activity or Event: Participating in Songfest in 2010 was one of my favourite activities.  Also, Founders Day is always something I look forward to each year.  I love seeing alumnae attend that initiated 50+ year ago and that Delta Gamma continues to mean something to them long after their collegiate days.

    QUICK QUESTIONS
    1) Imagine you didn't have DG in your life. Describe your personality/life.

If I had never joined Delta Gamma, my University experience would not have been as fulfilling or exciting.  I most likely wouldn't have volunteered for leadership positions or community organizations and obtaining good grades might not have been as important as it is to me now.  I definitely wouldn't have a diverse group of friends as I do now and most importantly someone up for a good dance party!

    2) What about DG will you miss the most?

Sure I will miss Formal, Barn Dance, and Recruitment Events, but the thing I will miss the most about being a collegiate member of Delta Gamma will be the absence of Monday meetings.  I always look forward to catching up with my sisters, laughing about silly things, and the sense of sisterhood that can always be felt in the room.

    3) Write a letter to your new member class.
To the new member class of 2008 -

I had no idea what to expect when I joined recruitment.  At times, it was somewhat overwhelming and I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, however knowing that I was part of the group was incredibly comforting.  I will always think back to our new member period fondly.  An entertaining experience could always be expected sitting downstairs in the basement and learning the history of Delta Gamma.  I have to say, I don't think I've ever had to complete a more difficult exam.  Thanks M.M. ;)  Whether it was a big event like AnchorSplash, Barn Dance, Anchor Ball, or just hanging out casually, I always knew that I could count on having fun and escaping from the stress of school!  While I may not have had a close relationship with all of you, I just want you to know that I have enjoyed knowing each and everyone of you and value the time and conversations that we have had together. You are all strong, confident women and there is no doubt in my mind that you will be successful in all that you do in the future.  Just remember that I might have graduated, but I still want to stay in the loop with everything that's going on in your lives! LITB,  xoxo S

    Founders Day 2011

    By Sarah Flowers (Fall '08)

FoundersMarch 15 is a special day for every Delta Gamma, whether a collegian or alumna member of our beloved fraternity. On – or as close as possible to – this day, DGs gather together to celebrate by remembering our past and looking forward to our organization's future.

Delta Gamma was founded at the Lewis School for Girls (near the University of Mississippi) during the Christmas holidays in 1873. The three young founders were Anna Boyd Ellington, Eva Webb Dodd, and Mary Comfort Leonard – friends who sought to form a club of mutual improvement that focused on intellectual growth and service.  Anna, Eva, and Mary decided to use the phrase "Do Good" to define the purpose of their newfound group.  Our Founders also desired to maintain high ideals and standards in order to be exemplary members of their school community.

Happy 138th Birthday, dear Delta G! May you continue to love, serve, grow, teach, and anchor all of us during our Delta Gamma journeys.

Our Founders (clockwise from bottom left): Eva Webb Dodd, Mary Comfort Leonard, and Anna Boyd Ellington.

    International Badge Day 2011

    By Sarah Flowers (Fall '08)

Since 1997, the National Panhellenic Conference has

hosIBDted an annual affair known as International Badge Day.  This event celebrates sisterhood and the shared values of all Panhellenic women - leadership, volunteerism, and scholarship.  This year we are celebrating International Badge Day on March 7.  For sorority women, March is an important month - not only do we celebrate International Badge Day, but March 1-7 is International Ritual Week.  This weeklong event encourages Greek women to connect with their sisters and foster a deeper understanding of our rituals.

For 2011, the theme of International Badge Day is "Keep Your Fraternity Experience Close to Your Heart".  This reoccurring idea was also used in 2009 and 2010 to remind sorority women to cherish their Greek experience.  Today, for International Badge Day 2011, we encourage all sorority women to wear their badges with pride.

    Happy International Badge Day!

On February 22, 2011 a 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked Christchurch, New Zealand.  Hundreds of people were reported missing or deceased after the disaster struck.  Amidst the calamity of the quake and subsequent aftershock, Delta Gamma Kirsten Olesen (Winter '08) decided to exempify the meaning of the DG motto "Do Good".  Kirsten and her fellow students are working tirelessly as volunteers for the relief of the Christchurch area.  We hope to get a full update from Kirsten soon but in the meantime we are so proud of the amazing work she is doing Down Under.

One weekend in February, Beta Beta president Mallory McMurtrie (Fall '07) and Vice President: Membership Cait Chalmers (Fall '08) had the opportunity of a lifetime.  The two women got to attend the Delta Gamma Institute for Leadership and Membership, a three day workshop at Delta Gamma Executive Offices in Columbus, Ohio that focuses on developing recruitment techniques and leadership skills.  Traveling with the pair was Membership Advisor Jen Anderson-Wong (Fall '05).  These three lucky DGs got to meet other sisters from all over North America, including the other two Canadian chapters - Alpha Phi at the University of British Columbia and Zeta Omicron at Wilfred Laurier University! We are so proud of these three ladies for representing Beta Beta chapter so well and loved hearing all the stories from their weekend at EO!

DG Activity or Event: Raise-a-Reader (Waking up at five am sucks, but trust me – it’s worth it!!)

    QUICK QUESTIONS
    1) Imagine you didn't have DG in your life. Describe your personality/life.

Wow – I would probably be anti-social and friendless. Just kidding. DG provided me with a support system, endless friendships, and a group of girls to share the experience(the ups and the downs) of university with. It’s hard to imagine my university experience without DG, I think I would be another person entirely.

    2) What about DG will you miss the most?

The people – One never truly appreciates the significance of a friend. I will miss the inside jokes, the random fits of laughter, the study sessions, the venting, and always having someone to talk to when you need it.

    3) Leave a message for your new member class.
To My New Member Class of Fall 2007:
Our period of membership has seen its fair share of ups and downs. We started off struggling – learning to adapt to university and its demanding timetable, while at the same time trying to ignite our bonds of friendship and becoming part of this wonderful organization. It was a rocky start to say the least, but we were able prevail. Second year came and slowly, we were able to adapt. We formed a routine, we actually studied, and we maintained a social life. By third year we knew what we were doing; we enjoyed ourselves. I think this is when we grew close, because we knew that soon it would all be over. Now we are in our fourth and final years and there is only a month left. One month to soak up all the memories. We have to start saying our goodbyes and move on into another world. It’s bizarre how quickly it went by, but we stayed together through it all. I will miss you guys so much. Much love to Meghan Kelly and  Mallory McMurtrie (both Fall '07). WE DID IT!

    Let's spread the love!

    Love DG

In honor of today, I would also like to post something I love dearly - a list!  Here are ten reasons why I love DG and being a Delta Gamma girl:

    1. unconditional love and support from my sisters
    2. all of DG's catchy songs and cheers!
    3. seeing random anchors everywhere and being reminded that we are anchored for life
    4. the fact that DG was founded based on friendship and a desire for excellence
    5. knowing that no matter where I go, I will find Delta Gamma sisters there
    6. DG conventions and conferences - can't wait for Indiana 2012!
    7. sisterhood nights, chapter events, and weekly meetings
    8. our colors.  we are the Delta Gammas, wearing bronze, pink, and blue!
    9. recruitment - reconnecting with sisters and meeting potential new ones!

You Are Always Wearing Your Letters

At this year's Greek formal, fraternity and sorority advisor Carly Miller Giesbrecht read this inspiring entry from the Hungry Student Leader blog.  Many of us have seen or heard this before - at conferences, at meetings, or online.  The entry, titled You Are Always Wearing Your Letters, promotes a crucial message that every Greek should keep in mind when going about his or her daily life.  You Are Always Wearing Your Letters is always worth reading (or re-reading) if you need a reminder.  Enjoy!

You’re interested in joining our fraternity? We’d love to have you. You’re the type of person we look for: committed, enthusiastic, a leader. We think you’ll do great things here, and we hope that we’ll open some doors for you. You will make lifelong friendships, and hopefully, you’ll be the type of person whose positive impact will be felt here for many years.

This is the start of something really cool.

We know you have your reasons for joining, and we also know that the reasons you’ll stay will be entirely different. Trust us on that one. People tend to join for the image, the props, and the social stuff. They stay around for the friendships and because they find a place where they can impact the lives of others. It’s a family. We know this. Soon, you will, too.

Soon, these letters will be yours. But, there’s one lesson that we need to impress upon you before you sign your name on the dotted line, pay that first fee, and get that first t-shirt. It’s the single most important thing we’re going to ask of you, so you need to listen and understand it, now, before you say “yes.”

It’s the one most important thing that any fraternity or sorority can impress upon its new members. It’s the one lesson that every group must impress upon its newest members. Truly, our survival as an organization on this campus, and nationwide, depends on you understanding this one simple lesson and taking it to heart.

It’s more important than our history, our traditions, our structure, or our rules. Because, if you don’t understand this most fundamental lesson, then none of the other stuff will matter. If you don’t get this one “golden rule of fraternity,” then your son or daughter won’t have this kind of organization to join someday, and all of this will just be a fuzzy memory.

    Here it is. Ready?

From the moment you say yes to this organization, you are always wearing your letters.

    I’m going to repeat it.

From the moment you say yes to this organization, you are always wearing your letters.

We’re not talking about t-shirts, or sweatshirts, or hats made in the colors of the group. We’re not talking about a tattoo on your ankle, some party favor, or a badge you wear on your dress shirt.

What we mean is that when you say yes to lifetime membership in this group, everything you say, do and represent from that moment forward is a direct reflection on this group, your brothers, and the thousands of members who have come before you. Everything you put out to the world is a direct reflection of this fraternity. Every decision, every achievement, every mistake you make happens to all of us from this point forward.

When you go to the grocery store, you represent us. If you fall asleep in class or earn a weak grade, you represent us. When you drive down the road and slow down so a pedestrian can cross the street, you represent us.

When you turn 21 and hit the town, you represent us. When you become a leader of another campus organization, you represent us. When you insult someone or talk badly about another fraternity, you represent us. When you break up with someone and make decisions about how you behave during that difficult time, you represent us. When you go on Spring Break, you represent us.

When you go home and sit at your mother’s dining room table, you represent us. When you get a job and go to work for a company or organization, you represent us. When you commit your life to that special person, someday, you represent us.

You are always wearing your letters.

From this day forward, always. Every day, in every situation. They never come off.

As surely as if you tattooed these letters on your forehead. It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing a jersey with our name on it, or a business suit at an interview. You have to assume that every person you meet will form a permanent opinion about fraternities – good or bad – based on how you interact with them. Every good thing you do builds us up. Every dumb thing you do tears us down.

We live in a time when the actions of one man or one woman can kill a group like ours. One person who acts in a way that is inconsistent with our shared values can end a hundred years of tradition and pride. One choice you make on a Friday night can take away everything that generations of men have worked to build.

All the stuff you see that belongs to us can be boxed up or thrown out, because of the choices you make.
If this seems a little intense, that’s good. Because it’s serious. If it sounds like too much responsibility, or if you don’t think you can behave in a way that reflects well on us at all times, then walk away now. Do us the favor. We won’t think less of you. In fact, we’ll thank you. This sort of commitment isn’t for everybody.

But, don’t say yes unless you understand.

We’re not asking you to give up anything. We aren’t asking you to become something you aren’t. We’re asking you to become something more. We’re inviting you to become part of a group of men who make a promise to take care of each other, every day. We’re asking you to become the very best version of you that you can be. We’re asking you to take a leap of maturity and to go to that place where you’re the same, honorable, dignified person on Saturday night as you are on Tuesday morning.

It’s a big deal, and not everyone can do it. Forget everything you’ve heard up to this point. Forget how much you might desire this, or how much we might want to bring you into the group. Just clear your mind and ask yourself one question.

Are you ready to never take them off?

Because when you say yes, you’re not just putting letters on a sweatshirt. You’re putting them in your heart. You’re forever stamping your identity with them. Everything you are, from this point on, becomes who we are.

You will make mistakes, and brothers will remind you of your commitment. There will be times where you will see other brothers forgetting their promise, and you’ll need to remind them. That’s part of this whole “fraternity” thing. We work together to make ourselves better men who stand for something. We carry each other. We matter to one another.

If we’re doing fraternity right, then we’ll make you a better man. If you’re doing everything right, then you will make us a better organization. So, please think about it. Take it seriously. Because if you say yes, these letters belong to you as surely as they belonged to our founders. If you say yes, these letters become your responsibility forever.

    That’s the promise.

Order of Omega Presents: Greek Formal 2011

    By Sarah Flowers (Fall '08)

On Saturday, January 29, Greeks gathered to celebrate the achievements of the past year at Greek Formal, an annual event hosted by Greek honors society the Order of Omega.  2011 was a particularly important year as the community celebrated 80 years of our presence on the University of Alberta campus.  The night began with a wonderful dinner, followed by a series of speeches and awards presented by distinguished guests - Dean of Students Frank Robinson, Greek advisor Carly Miller Giesbrecht, and several notable alumni from various chapters.  Thank you to all of those who took time out of your busy schedules to come and talk to the collegiate members of Greek society on Saturday night!  It was inspiring to hear the stories of your time as active members of the Greek community.

While every chapter received some form of recognition on Saturday night, Delta Gamma is proud to be the winner of two awards - Panhellenic Woman of the Year (to President Mallory McMurtrie) and Longest Standing Philanthropic Event for our annual Anchor Splash competition, which has been hosted annually since 1984.  Way to go  DG!

DG Activity or Event:  Anything you can think of that is Greek, I've done it! One of my favourites is playing both women's and co-ed volleyball.

    QUICK QUESTIONS
    1) Imagine you didn't have DG in your life. Describe your personality/life.

My life would be quite empty without Delta Gamma. Some of the best events are held by Greeks and I never would've considered participating in them had it not been for being Greek. I think I would still be a quiet, introverted student, always looking for something more in my University experience. Guaranteed I would have a smaller social network, and I would live with roomates I would likely come to hate.

    2) What about DG will you miss the most?

Seriously, everything. I don't even want to think about my life without weekly meetings, constantly seeing my best friends, volunteering, dressing up pretty for formal, dressing up western for Barn Dance and even having the time of my life dressing up like a drag queen!

    3) Leave a message for chapter - what are your hopes for DG?

Take the time to become interfraternal. You never know how much fun it can be until you do something crazy fun, or something meaningful with another campus chapter. Also, take the time to hold at least one position in chapter. There are many things you can learn through this other side of DG. Last, I am going to miss every single one of the past and present Beta Beta girls. Whether you realize it or not, each one of you has touched me in some way.

Entering the bonds of sisterhood in Delta Gamma is a wonderful moment no DG will ever forget.  The initiations weekend - more commonly known as I&I - is a time where all sisters gather together to formally welcome our new member class to Delta Gamma.  Beta Beta chapter would like to extend a wholehearted congratulations to all of the wonderful women who initiated this past weekend!  May this next part of your Delta Gamma journey  (as an active member) be as enriching as the new member pursuit you just completed a few short days ago.

To the Fall 2010 new member class of Beta Beta chapter: welcome to sisterhood!

Big & Little Reveal: Fall 2010

    By Sarah Flowers (Fall '08)

One of the most exciting events in Delta Gamma is Big & Little Sister week.  After several days of clues and guesses, each new member (finally!) discovers the identity of her Big Sister.  For many Delta Gammas, Big & Little Reveal is one of the most significant moments of their DG experience.  The bond between each Big and Little pair is wonderfully unique, even in a sisterhood that already displays extraordinary bonds between it's members.  A Big - or Little - Sister is everything from a study buddy and personal cheerleader to a shoulder to cry on and a friend to laugh with.  Congratulations to the new Big and Little pairs of Fall 2010.  May you create many wonderful memories together!

    By Sarah Flowers (Fall '08)

Every year, DGs get the chance to kick up their heels Western-style and have a great night out with their sisters and dates.  This annual event - known as Barn Dance - is a chance for DGs to get in touch with their inner cowgirl (we are in Alberta, after all!) and dress down in plaid, jeans, and other Western wear.  This year, sisters and their dates enjoyed a night out that included good music, good food, good company, and even better dance moves!  From two-stepping to a line dance competition, everyone enjoyed dancing the night away at this year's Barn Dance.  Can't wait for next year's event?  While we're counting down the days to Barn Dance 2011, here are some photos from last night to enjoy.

    Major: Physical Education

Program: Physical Education and Education Combined Degree
Dream Job: Not quite sure.  However, doing High School Phys Ed all the time seems like a pretty sweet deal!
    Year in University: 6th

    Past DG Involvement:

    - Director of Continuous Open Bidding (COB)

    - Director of Recruitment Records

    Other Group Affiliations:
None at the moment. I am in my APT and barely have time to breath! However, during my APT, I will try to help with the dance troupe and basketball teams, as well as sing in the teacher/student choir. I am super excited to get involved!

    FAST FAVORITES
Class/Teacher: Physical Education APT, where I get to try a lot of sports and activities.

Experience Outside of DG: Figure Skating. I had figure skated competitively for 21 years and I will always love it. Once you find something you are good at it's hard to let it go.  In fact, I may try picking it up again next term and inquiring about the University Games.

    Why DG?

I chose a traditional Panhellenic sorority because I love the history of it all. I love learning about where, when, how and why we were started. I like to know the purpose behind an organization or team (or whatever it is) before joining. Delta Gamma is a great group of strong women who are capable of being leaders for anything they desire. I wanted to be a part of that.

    DG Activity or Event
My favorite event is Founders Day. We have a nice brunch and get to meet alot of the alumna. I love hearing their stories, as well as seeing scrapbooks and meeting their children - some of them may one day decide to follow in their mothers' path and join Delta Gamma. To know where you are going, you need to know where you are coming from.

    QUICK QUESTIONS
    1) Imagine you didn't have DG in your life.  Describe your personality/life.
I would probably still be on the dance team and not have all the volunteer and leadership
opportunities that I have grown so fond of.  I would never have met some of my best friends because I was stuck in my life of Physical Education.  Don't get me wrong - I love it and Phys Ed students are probably the best!  However, I now have friends from all faculties that I would have never had the opportunity to work and collaborate with.  Delta Gamma gave me the confidence to be a leader in situations not involving figure skating or dance which transfers into my teaching degree. To be a teacher, you need to own your leadership capabilities in many aspects and DG gave me that little push I needed.

    2) What about DG will you miss the most?
Although I will still have my Little Sister (Danielle Galloway, Fall '09) forever and for always, I will miss the opportunity to mentor and try to be a good role model to new members as they enter the world of Greek life and learn the inner workings of Delta Gamma.

    3)  Write a farewell message to your pledge class.
To the Pledge Class of Fall 2008 and Aislin (Winter 2009),
I hopes that you continue to help women find their way and strive to meet their highest standards. I hope that you as a chapter continue to grow closer and continue to help each other out as we would our own family becasue we are just that. We are sisters. I absolutely love our HUGE pledge class and am glad I have met each and every one of you. Good luck with the rest of your university careers and I wish you all the best. I'm not completely certain If I'm going anywhere once I graduate but if I don't I'll be around...you know this. If I'm elsewhere then you'll probably just have some place hot to visit and will be bombarded with e-mails, messages, snail mail, and postcards!

I will leave you with my favorite quote:

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do.  It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

    Shine on DGs!

    A Delta Gamma Thanksgiving

    By Sarah Flowers (Fall '08)

Every Thanksgiving, people ask one another "what are you thankful for?"  Here at Delta Gamma, we have so much for which to be grateful.  First and foremost, we are thankful for our sisters - the amazing women who truly make our Delta Gamma experience.   We are also grateful for the chance to thrive in the areas of scholarship, leadership, and volunteerism - the ability to "do good" is a blessing bestowed upon every DG.  The DGs here at Beta Beta chapter hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    1) Imagine you didn't have DG in your life. Describe your personality/life.

I wouldn't be involved in leadership positions, I probably would have moved back to Calgary after first year and I wouldn't have found a degree program that I loved this much.  DGs have also been there to encourage me, give me guidance when I need it, and motivate me to excel in every aspect of life.

    2) What about DG will you miss the most?

I will miss seeing everyone every Monday and looking forward to all the events (I'll be back for Founders Day though!)

    3) Leave a message for chapter - what are your hopes for DG?

I hope that you continue to accept each other without judgement, learn to take full responsibility for your actions, to motivate each other to reach your highest potential, acquire leadership skills and really learn how to work together as a team.

    Anchor Thud Week 2010!

    By Sarah Flowers (Fall '08)

    Jina

President Jina Shin (Fall '08) enjoying a serenade.

Welcome to Anchor Thud Week 2010, a weeklong competition dedicated to raising both funds and awareness for two Delta Gamma philanthropies - the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) and the United Way.  The week kicked off last night with the popular event Serenade the President.  Teams came to DG in order to win points using original songs that included a myriad of items within their lyrics, such as the president's name, a fact about Delta Gamma, and information about Anchor Splash.  To see the coaching rubrics, check out the Service section of our site and click on Anchor Splash!  It's tough to say which serenade was the favourite of our president, Jina Shin, but DGs know that Jina has a weak spot for two Canadian singers - Justin Bieber and Michael Bublé.  Some teams definitely capitalized on that fact!  From piano music and candlelight to dance routines and props - which ranged from a coffin to a retro boom-box - Anchor Splash teams went all out for Serenade 2010.  A definite crowd pleaser?  The several Delta Gamma-related covers of Katy Perry's "California Gurls".  Thank you to all the teams who participated last night - everyone did a fabulous job!  Delta Gamma hopes to see all of your beautiful eyes today at our "Most Beautiful Eyes" booth in SUB!

    Delta Gamma Doing Good:

CIBC Run for the Cure 2010

    By Sarah Flowers (Fall '08)

Who are you running for?  On October 3, 2010 the ladies of Delta Gamma will be lacing up their running shoes to partake in this year's CIBC Run for the Cure.  This annual event is a national fundraiser which helps support breast cancer research, awareness, and education in hopes of finding a cure.  DGs have participated for the past several years - first as a chapter (at the 2008 run) and then on the U of A Greeks team in 2009. This year, the Beta Beta chapter of Delta Gamma has thirteen sisters running under the name Delta Gamma Doing Good.  We DGs are excited to take part in such a fantastic fundraiser!  Alongside our family members and friends, we are proud to support the nineteenth annual CIBC Run for the Cure.  On Sunday, October 3, keep an eye out for Delta Gamma Doing Good as DGs run (or walk) towards a future without breast cancer.

Where in the World are DGs?

Skyler (Fall '05) and Tia (Fall '07): Korea

    Hello Beta Beta Sisters!

I hope the new school year (along with recruitment) has started on a high note! My DG years are irreplaceable and my favourite memories are the ones with my sisters! I am writing to tell you a little bit about my life abroad, so here goes!

I never ever thought I would be living in Korea! I love travelling, but Korea was definitely not on my “hit list”. I arrived in Korea at the end of July, so while things are still pretty new I am really starting to feel at home! I work at a private kindergarten school, called a Hogwan, where I teach ten 4 and 5 years olds anything from “phonics” to a class called “water gun play”. I know – could my life get any sweeter! It is so nice waking up to a job you love, having children call you pretty and tell you they love you everyday!

Korean people are extremely generous and always willing to help you out! I have met so many well-traveled people here! I can’t say I really love Korean food but those who know me well know I am a very picky eater and mostly only eat junk food! Korean food is very spicy and they eat a lot of meat, I have already given up my vegetarianism. Fashion here is insane, and you rarely see girls not in high heels! Everything in Seoul is artsy and feminine.  Not just the fashion, but everything is so aesthetically pleasing – from the buildings and food to the people (who are obsessed with plastic surgery).  What else? I’m sure you could have guessed that everything in Korea is technologically advanced. The subway system is unreal and all Korean apartments have heated floors for the cold winters (haha but they are nothing compared to ours). My bank even text messaged me to ask me a question about my account! Seoul is just one big urban metropolis.

As for upcoming plans, my new “chingus” (friends in Korean) and I are heading down to the beach this week to an area in Busan as we have 10 days off for Korean Thanksgiving. For Christmas, I will be going to either Vietnam or the Philippines! :)

Soon to join Tia Luker (Fall ’07) and I in Korea is Jenna Constable, another DG! This is like DG paradise! I love Korea. If you are thinking about teaching abroad after you are done to make some cash or as an opportunity to travel, I highly suggest it!

I haven’t regretted my decision once! You can follow my blog at:  http://skylersnourishedseoul.blogspot.com/.

Good luck with the semester girlies! Enjoy your time, it goes fast!

    Women's Recruitment: Fall 2010

    By Sarah Flowers (Fall '08)

The start of the new school year is almost here!  Between attending classes and braving bookstore line-ups, be sure to check out Clubs Fair.  This year, Clubs Fair starts off in the Butterdome (on September 6 and 7) before moving to the Quad from September 8 to 10.  Come stop by the University of Alberta Panhellenic Council booth to meet women from internationally recognized sororities and see if Greek life is right for you!  Being in a sorority at the University of Alberta offers a collegiate experience unlike any other.  Sisterhood, scholarship, service, and leadership opportunities are all available to members of the four diverse chapters that reside on campus.  You can also check out the Panhellenic information sessions on Wednesday, September 8 and Thursday, September 9 to learn more about going Greek and making the most of your university experience!  For further information, please go to The University of Alberta Greek Life website or check out the University of Alberta Sororities page on Facebook.

    Chapter Retreat

    By Sarah Flowers (Fall '08)

As summer draws to a close, DGs are beginning to get even more excited (if that’s possible!) for one of the biggest events of the year – fall recruitment! To get chapter ready for rush, our VP: Membership, Tara Faria (Fall '06), organized a fantastic weekend retreat that combined recruitment preparation with sisterhood fun. The retreat included a visit from CDC Aundrea Dahl, who is an alum of the Zeta Epsilon chapter at Santa Clara University.  We were so lucky to have her visit us for several days and help chapter to prepare for recruitment. Thank you so much for being there, Aundrea – you will be missed! Another special thanks goes out to fabulous active member Aislin McIntyre (Winter '09) for lending her cabin to DG for the retreat weekend! Check out some of the photos from retreat below.
